I am happy to announce my new little book Reflecting New York It is available worldwide on the self-publishing online platform blurb and can be previewed and/or ordered here With an introduction by New York journalist Claudia Steinberg
About the Book: Using a hand held mirror in locations around New York photographer Stefan Falke invites distant buildings, structures or other visuals into the main photo to create a viewing experience that requires a second look. At times the reflection in the mirror becomes the main photo. His goal is to visually loosen up the obvious, to create images that journalist Claudia Steinberg described with these words: “What pleasurable confusion, what wonderful bewilderment, such visual richness!”. He is letting his creativity run wild while hunting for visual angles for this personal book project, and although it is a difficult undertaking working with two images at once the results often surprise him as much as he hopes they will surprise and intrigue the viewer.
“The program seeks to identify and select an outstanding male and female photographer from each of the six continents, namely Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania.”
These twelve photographers will be invited to the festival and awarded for their projects and contributions to the field of photography and their work will be exhibited during the festival week in Sharjah, UAE:
Thandiwe Muriu (Africa), Gurcharan Roopra (Africa), Sirachai Arunrugstichai (Asia), Emily Garthwaite (Asia), Shane Hulbert (Australia Oceania), Charlotte Piho (Australia Oceania), Mario Heller (Europe), Chantal Pinzi (Europe), Stefan Falke (North America), Erin Trieb (North America), Johanna Alarcón (South America), Gabriel Chaim (South America).
A big Thank You to the 2023 Global Focus Project committee, to the creative director of the festival, Simon Newton, and to nominator Frank Meo !!

In this award winning photo book New York City photographer Stefan Falke focuses on the resilience of his fellow New Yorkers, on moments of normalcy under exceptional circumstances during the pandemic in 2020. The positive attitude in these stunning photographs of his chosen hometown show New Yorkers doing what they always do: They keep going !! A series of photos from this book were awarded 2nd place for series by the American Society of Media Photographers in the Best of ASMP 2020 contest and it won the CA 2021 Award of Excellence and selected images were published in Communication Arts Photography Annual 62.
58 color photographs, 62 pages, 10×8 in, 25×20 cm, available as hard or soft cover.
With an introduction by New York journalist Claudia Steinberg.
But, it is worth noting that in todays publishing world the photo book photographer is usually asked to substantially help with the costs for printing etc; the publisher who will carry the entire financial burden of a photo book is becoming an increasingly rare species !
So this little book is a labor of love, something that I am proud of, something that kept me busy during those challenging months, and something that became – from my personal view – a lasting record of the streets of my chosen hometown New York City during the pandemic in 2020.
Thank you American Society of Media Photographers for awarding my series “Keep Going New York !!” with the second place in series 2020!! (the news came 2 month ago but I am still very happy about it)
Congratulations to all winning photographers !! Great work by all winners on view on the ASMP contest website here

in January 2021, after photographing the streets of New York during the pandemic from March – December 2020.
I focused on the resilience of my fellow New Yorkers, on moments of normalcy under exceptional circumstances during the worst time of the pandemic. I kept a positive attitude walking around my chosen hometown during those challenging times and photographed New Yorkers doing what they always do: They keep going !!
I keep going too, by shooting new videos and photos about the book and publishing the results here on a regular basis. So this blog is not only about the book but also about my new photo adventures in New York City. Having worked as a professional still photographer for a large part of my life, I am starting to enjoy shooting small and entertaining videos as well and I will share them with you here too, like the one above.
I hope you enjoy my new blog and if you like, you can preview (and/or order) my book here !!
